URGENT APPEAL

Due to 2 of our regular stalwarts that have crucial roles in running the Evening Ten Time Trials going 'under the knife' in the next week or so, we are in need of some temporary help (perhaps for a month or so) on a Tuesday evening. If you feel you can assist as a Pusher Off or Time Keeper, please let someone in the Club know, or even just turn up! Venue and time details are on the Racing Page. You do not need to be a member to help with this, any help gratefully accepted.

We are happy to report that John Parslow has come through his operation successfully, is due out of Intensive Care imminently and is on the road to recovery. Thanks to John Evans for helping with pushing off this Tuesday.

Mapperley CC Open 10 24/5/08

A cold, gusting North Easterly wind provided challenging conditions (almost the exact opposite of that required for a 'fast day') for the 49 riders who tackled Saturday's race. Times were about a minute down on what might be expected, the latter half of the field getting cooler conditions as the sun disappeared and the temperature dropped from 16 to 12 degrees. None of this prevented Geoff Platts from taking the win (his first as a Grandad he proudly announced afterwards), a mere 8 seconds ahead of Andy Proffitt, with Darren Buckby only another 3 seconds back in third. North Notts Olympic took the Team Prize, and well done to Jason V who made the top ten riding fixed with a gear that looked slightly too big for the drag to the turn into the headwind!

Thanks to all who rode - only 1 DNF and 5 DNS - a good percentage from an initial entry of 54.

Thanks also to the back-up team of Marshalls, caterers and timekeepers / pusher-off etc. You know who you are - couldn't have done it without you!

Top Ten.

1 Geoff Platts De Rosa RT 22:02
2 Andy Proffitt Arctic- Premier Racing Team 22:10
3 Darren Buckby Go Sports Spex RT 22:13
4 Neil Kirk North Notts Olympic RC 22:26
5 Ian Ball Hinckley CRC 22:37
6 David Yates North Notts Olympic RC 22:52
7 Ashley Long Coalville Wheelers CC 23:05
8 Mark Heath Echelon Cycles 23:10
9 Colin Parkinson South Western RC 23:20
10 Jason Varnam Mapperley CC 23:35

Zenith CC Grand Prix des Gents 21/5/08

Run over 17.1 miles on the A17/1 course (Sixhills on the Fosseway - and there are at least that many!) the Club had three teams riding this year, so we were well represented. Conditions were dry but cooling, with a cross/head wind on the hardest leg. Results as follows:

A Team - Steve Long/Robin Thomas 38:52 (+7:23 Std)

B Team - Sean Eden/Mick Stojanovic 39:44 (+7:55 Std)

C Team - Jason Varnam/Phil Collier 40:44 (+8:44 Std)

Everyone was reasonably pleased with their efforts, considering 3 of us were just back from a week in Italy and 4 had ridden the Evening 10 the night before!

Club Kit

We will be ordering another batch of clothing very soon. There are a number of new garments offered in this year's catalogue as well as some improved materials, with a claimed improved/refined fit for most of the Winter season tops. A PDF copy of the new Catalogue can be viewed using the link following this article. I've requested samples of most of the new stuff, contact Phil Collier to see these and place your order. Please bear in mind we only order approximately every 2 years, so consider your requirements for summer as well as winter clothing.

Evening Ten Time Trials

On Tuesday May 6th, the Evening Ten will start at 7.15, and the following week, May 13th the event will start at 7.30, continuing at this start time until further notice . See the Events page for further details and a link to a Course Map.

Club Nights

It has been decided to change the evening and venue of the monthly clubnights. From September, we will now meet on the first TUESDAY of the month, at the Ramsdale Park Golf Centre, Oxton Lane, Calverton. Join us in the bar from 8pm onwards, or 7pm if you wish to indulge in a meal first (or maybe swing at a basket of balls on the Golf Range). This is the venue we have been made welcome at after the Evening Ten time trials since losing our previous venue just across the road!

Mapperley CC Mallorca Training Camp - April 2007

This year's Camp now seems but a dim, distant, wet memory. For once, the weather was not quite what we've come to expect from Mallorca!

Nevertheless, and as you might expect, our heroic group stoically suffered the misery of being unable to ride for nearly two and a half days, and turned this "bike downtime" into a positive by arranging various other forms of training. This involved, in the main, Carb and Protein loading, upper body weight training using varied heavy liquid filled glass weights, and for some of the extreme athletes amongst the group, late night (or even early morning) triathlon swim training in the Mediterranean!

Eventually the weather relented, and began to resemble the Mallorcan climate we've all come to know and love, thus enabling our intrepid group to get on with the more important aspects of such trips, namely suffering on long climbs, dare-devil descending, cross country orienteering (with and without maps) and most importantly, "Eric Baiting". All of this, of course, fueled by copious amounts of pasta and varied (jamon y queso) bocadillos!

Next year, plans are afoot to change the venue completely (rather than just relocating on the Island), and currently Italy is the front runner. Watch this space for future info.

Ready for the final day's run to San Salvador! For more of the same, click the picture.
